Celebrate Teen Read Week with us October 12 – 18, 2008. This year’s theme is “Books with Bite”! Share your favorite scary book with us here and stop by for a prize after your response has been posted. All contributions should be about books that are appropriate for middle school students to read, you must include the name of the book and the first and last names of the author, tell us 3 things you liked about the book and why everyone should read this book. Written by one of my favorite writers of all time, R.L. Stein is The Rich Girl. This book starts off with two best friends. One is rich and the other is poor. On the way back from work one day, they have to stop at the dumpster. There, they find a bag full of money. Sydney, the rich one, insists that they leave the money alone because it is not safe to take so much money, unknowing where it came from. Emma wants to keep the bag immensely and finally she persuades Sydney to secretly take the money. When she gets home that day, Sydney can no longer keep the huge guilt buried inside, so she tells her boyfriend, Jason. Whenever Jason is around, bad things happen to Emma. Could he want to take her share of the money? Would he kill Sydney after that? Looks like you have to read, The Rich Girl to find out. It was a brilliant haunting book that took me on a thrilling meanwhile intimidating ride from the beginning to end, and I hope it provisions you equally for this Halloween season.
